I subsequently spoke to the recruiter and he showed me both letters. It was obvious why Jim didn’t get called for interview. To paraphrase the recruiter’s words, “It looked for all the world as if he had spent 98% of his efforts on his CV and only 2% of his time putting together a ‘bog standard’ cover letter”.

Even if you have an impressive CV, if you send it out with a soulless cover letter, then you may still not get an interview.

“Why isn’t my CV enough by itself?” I hear you cry. Well, sometimes the CV just doesn’t truly “connect” with the employer’s requirements.
